On June 16, 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A.) warned consumers to stop using three zinc-containing Zicam intranasal products. These Zicam swabs and nasal gels have been widely marketed for use as cold remedies:
Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs
Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size
According to the F.D.A., the Zicam products may cause a permanent loss of sense of smell. The products have also been linked to a loss of sense of taste. There have been more than 130 reports of anosmia - the loss of the sense of smell associated with these products. The F.D.A. has issued Matrixx Initiatives, the maker of these Zicam products, a warning letter telling it that these products cannot be marketed without FDA approval. The F.D.A. also advised Matrixx on June 16, 2009 that “[it is] not aware of any data establishing that the Zicam Cold Remedy intranasal products are generally recognized as safe and effective for the uses identified in their labeling.”
Attorneys at Paul William Beltz, P.C. have had years of experience of actually successfully representing persons exposed to toxic and defective products, including representing those who have suffered from a loss of smell and taste as a result of toxic exposures. The attorneys at our firm are presently pursuing such serious claims against the manufacturer of Zicam, Matrixx Initiatives of Scottsdale, Arizona.
If you or a family member have used ZICAM products and have questions regarding these products and the F.D.A. warning, we urge you to contact our office. As always, there is no fee for such representation unless and until your case results in a recovery. At a minimum, we urge you to discontinue the use any such products but to preserve any products or packaging and receipts or records of purchase.
